YVETTE SMILED AS HOOK held out his arm for her to hold. “If you put it that way, I do not see any reason why we cannot get along amiably for the next little while.”

She laughed. “I did not mention anything about being amiable. I will most likely beat you soundly the first time you deserve it.” She slipped her arm through his, taking note of his extremely muscular limb, and then smirked coyly up at him.

“I have no doubt in my mind you will beat me soundly,” he retorted as he began walking her through the brush and past the brambles where she had picked the berries. “You are just a one to hit me with that large shell of yours as soon as my back is turned.”

“Are you implying I am a coward, sir?”

“Ho! Now I see. You will most likely flip every sentence I speak to be used as a weapon against me.”

“Captain Hook, please do not insinuate that you have never spoken with a woman before, for we both know that the fairer sex is by far much more versed in banter than you men. Of course every sentence spoken will be used to strike back at you. However else will we remain in our superiority over you?”

He gasped and took her down a path that led deeper into the woods. “Then I am correct. You are a coward.”

“First of all,” she chuckled through her words, “you have just admitted to believing I am a coward and will most likely assault you when your back is turned. As if I could not do justice to aiming directly at your face. Furthermore, I have done that as I have struck back, if you recall!”

“Yes, vixen. I do recall vividly your need to do me bodily harm.”

“And secondly, I am not nor will I ever be a coward.”

He halted and stood in front of her, that devilish gleam in his eye giving her pause.

“Whatever is it?” she asked.

“I have half a notion to challenge you to kiss me again if you believe yourself not to be a coward.”

“Ha!” She snorted. “You seem to think that kissing you implies courage on my part. ’Tis not courage to kiss you—that would mean I would be concerned about losing my heart to you, or some other such ridiculous nonsense! No, to kiss you will only determine how ill I will become, because it is quite certain my stomach could not tolerate yet another peck from you.”

“Liar.” His eyes glittered dangerously, and all of a sudden, her heart began to race for no reason at all.

She pushed against him and began to walk. “I would no sooner kiss you again than I would a toad. And it has nothing to do with not being courageous.” As soon as the path straightened for a few meters, she turned to face him as she began to continue walking backwards. “And if you attempt such foolishness again, I will most definitely conk you over the head with my shell!”

Captain Hook grinned a completely distracting grin and loomed toward her.
